How to post a daily Jira digest to Google Chat

A daily digest is often better than one message per change: one post each morning listing what is open, overdue or new. Here is how to build it.

Before you start

Create an incoming webhook in the Google Chat space (space name > Apps & integrations > Webhooks). This needs Google Workspace Business or Enterprise with webhooks allowed by your admin. See the Jira to Google Chat guide for details.

Option 1: Jira Automation with a scheduled trigger (free, within plan limits)

  1. Create an automation rule with the Scheduled trigger, for example every weekday at 9:00.
  2. Enable the option to run a JQL search, for example project = ABC AND statusCategory != Done AND updated >= -1d.
  3. Add a Send web request action: method POST, the webhook URL, header Content-Type: application/json, and a custom body such as
    {"text": "Daily Jira digest:\n{{#lookupIssues}}{{key}} {{summary}} ({{status.name}})\n{{/}}"}
  4. Run the rule once manually and check the space.

Limits: you maintain the message template yourself, long lists can exceed message size, and you need one rule per space or per query.

Option 2: Threadline for Jira digests

Threadline for Jira includes daily digests alongside real-time routes. Pick the projects or JQL, the space and the time, and Threadline sends a formatted summary. Quiet hours and batching keep the space readable, and the delivery log shows every message sent. It runs on Atlassian Forge, is free for up to 10 users ($0.80 per user per month above that) and is pending Atlassian Marketplace review.

Frequently asked questions

Can Jira send a daily summary to Google Chat without an app?

Yes. A Jira Automation rule with a scheduled trigger, a JQL search and a Send web request action can post a list of issues to a Google Chat webhook.

What smart value lists the issues in a scheduled rule?

Use {{#lookupIssues}} ... {{/}} to loop over the issues returned by the rule's JQL search.

Can I send the digest by email instead?

Yes. Jira filter subscriptions email the results of a saved filter on a schedule. See our guide to scheduled Jira reports by email.
