How to send Jira notifications to Google Chat
Google Chat spaces accept messages through incoming webhooks. Jira Cloud can post to them in two ways.
Step 1: create a Google Chat webhook
- In Google Chat on the web, open the space, click the space name, then Apps & integrations, Webhooks, Add webhook.
- Name it (for example "Jira") and copy the URL. Treat it like a password.
Incoming webhooks need Google Workspace Business or Enterprise, and your Workspace admin must allow them. Free Gmail accounts can't create them.
Step 2, option A: Jira Automation
Create an automation rule with a trigger (for example Issue created) and a Send web request action that POSTs JSON such as {"text": "New issue: {{issue.key}} {{issue.summary}}"} to the webhook URL. This works well for a few simple rules. Each rule is configured separately, and automation runs count toward your plan's usage limits.
Step 2, option B: Threadline for Jira
Threadline for Jira is built for this job: route by project, event, priority, status, labels, assignee or JQL, keep one thread per issue, batch bursts, send daily digests, respect quiet hours, and see every delivery in a log. Internal JSM comments are never posted. It runs on Atlassian Forge, is free for up to 10 users, and is pending Atlassian Marketplace review. See the setup steps.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official Jira integration for Google Chat?
Availability changes over time, so check the Google Workspace Marketplace and Atlassian Marketplace. Incoming webhooks work with any Jira Cloud site through Automation or an app.
Can I send only high-priority Jira issues to Google Chat?
Yes. In Jira Automation add a condition on priority, or in Threadline add a priority or JQL filter to the route.
Why are my Google Chat webhooks missing?
Your Google Workspace admin may have disabled incoming webhooks, or you are using a free Gmail account, which does not support them.
