How to export more than 1,000 Jira issues
The built-in export in Jira Cloud stops at a fixed number of issues per file (1,000 by default). Here is how to get a complete export anyway, using only Jira features first.
Why your export is cut off
Jira Cloud limits how many issues one CSV or Excel export can contain. Site admins on some plans can see the exact limit in their settings, but it cannot be raised without bound. In 2026 Atlassian also deprecated an older workaround that paged through results by editing the export URL, so exports above 10,000 issues now need to be split by search.
Step 1: count the issues
Run your search in the issue navigator and note the total. If it is above the limit, you need several smaller searches that together cover every issue exactly once.
Step 2: split the search with JQL
- By creation date:
project = ABC AND created >= "2026-01-01" AND created < "2026-04-01", then the next quarter, and so on. - By issue key range:
project = ABC AND key >= ABC-1 AND key <= ABC-1000, thenABC-1001toABC-2000. - By project or status: one export per project, or open and done issues separately.
Always add ORDER BY key so each file is predictable, and check that the counts of all parts add up to the total from step 1.
Step 3: export each part and merge
Export each search as CSV (all fields or current fields). Open the first file in Excel or Google Sheets, then paste the rows of the others below it, skipping their header rows. If columns differ between files (for example a custom field that is empty in one part), export with current fields and the same column layout for every part.
Common problems
- Accents or non-English text look broken: import the CSV with UTF-8 encoding instead of double clicking it.
- Everything lands in one column: use Data > Text to Columns, or import with comma as the separator.
- Comments or attachments missing: the built-in export includes limited comment data and no attachment files. See the Excel export guide for options.
When an app helps
If you repeat the same large export often, an export app saves the manual splitting and merging. Pledona Export for Jira exports a saved filter to Excel, CSV or PDF with comments and custom fields, can run on a schedule, and runs entirely on Atlassian Forge. It is free for up to 10 users and pending Atlassian Marketplace review. Test any app on a copy of your real filter before relying on it for very large exports.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Jira Cloud export limit?
The built-in CSV and Excel export returns up to 1,000 issues per file by default. Split larger searches with JQL.
Can I still export more than 10,000 issues with the URL workaround?
No. Atlassian deprecated that workaround in 2026. Split the search into smaller JQL queries instead.
How do I make sure no issues are missing?
Note the total from the full search, then check that the issue counts of all split searches add up to it.
