How to import JUnit or Playwright test results into Jira
Jira Cloud does not include test management, so there is no built-in screen that reads a JUnit XML or Playwright report. Here are the honest options, from free and simple to purpose-built.
Option 1: show builds in Jira with a CI integration (free)
If you mostly want to know whether the build for an issue passed, connect your CI tool. GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket Pipelines, Jenkins and others can send build status to the Development panel on each issue when the issue key appears in the branch name or commit message. You see pass or fail per build, not per test.
Option 2: create bugs from failures with Jira Automation (free, within plan limits)
- In your project, open Project settings > Automation and create a rule with the Incoming webhook trigger. Copy the webhook URL and keep it secret.
- Add a Create issue action that uses values from the request body, for example
{{webhookData.testName}}in the summary. - In your pipeline, parse the report (for example with a short script that reads
results.xmlor the Playwright JSON reporter output) and POST one JSON body per failed test to the webhook.
This works for a handful of failures. You have to write and maintain the parser, there is no history of passes, and every run counts toward your automation usage.
Option 3: a test management app
A test management app stores test cases, runs and results inside Jira and parses the reports for you. With Proofline, a Jira admin creates a per-site token, then one pipeline step uploads the report:
curl -sf -X POST "$PROOFLINE_URL?project=ABC&format=junit&cycle=Nightly" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $PROOFLINE_TOKEN" --data-binary @results.xml
Use format=junit for Jest, pytest, Maven, Gradle and Go JUnit reporters, format=playwright for the Playwright JSON reporter (npx playwright test --reporter=json > results.json) and format=cypress for mochawesome. Results match existing test cases by name, new tests are created automatically, and each run shows up in a test cycle and on linked issues. Proofline runs on Atlassian Forge, is free for up to 10 users and is pending Atlassian Marketplace review.
Frequently asked questions
Can Jira Cloud import JUnit XML natively?
No. Jira Cloud has no built-in test result import. You can show build status through CI integrations, create issues through an Automation incoming webhook, or use a test management app.
How do I get Playwright results as JSON?
Run Playwright with the JSON reporter, for example npx playwright test --reporter=json, and redirect the output to a file.
Should every failed test create a Jira bug?
Usually not. Flaky tests create noise. Many teams record results in a test cycle and create bugs only for confirmed failures.
